Monsoon has already struck Bokaro with frequent drizzles. The change in weather has raised concern about the health of animals in the Jawaharlal Nehru Zoological Park, which is owned and maintained by Bokaro Steel Plant. The rainy season is prone to parasitic diseases. Although animals are provided with shelters some spotted deer and blackbucks are still exposed to rain, which increases their risk of getting sick and therefore need extra care. The zoo staff is mixing antibiotics in their food so that they are protected against diseases.
As one zoo staff said, animals can cope with the changing environment and can deal with it in their own way.
Although appropriate protocols are being followed, the authorities of Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park said they have given antibiotics and deworming medicines to zoo animals and birds. The grasses are being cut and cleanliness is maintained for the inmates.
