“To Know Our Atmosphere”: An International Conclave Held at BIT Mesra….

Ranchi, 20 November 2024: The Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, hosted the International Conclave on Atmospheric Sciences 2024 as part of its Platinum Jubilee celebrations on 20th November 2024.With the theme “Know Our Atmosphere,” this event brought together renowned experts, researchers, and policymakers from India and abroad to discuss pressing, atmospheric challenges, their environmental implications, and potential solutions. Organized by the Department of Physics, this conclave showcased BIT Mesra’s commitment to advancing research and fostering collaborations in the field of Atmospheric Sciences. The event was spearheaded by Prof. Indranil Manna, Vice-Chancellor of BIT Mesra, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sinha, Chairperson of the Department of Physics, Dr. Nishi Srivastava, Convener, and Dr. Swagata Payra, Co-Convener from the Department of Remote Sensing.

The conclave commenced with an inaugural session attended by distinguished guests from BIT Mesra, including Prof. Sudip Das, Dean of Admission, Accreditation and Coordination, and Prof. Sunita Keshri. They recognized BIT Mesra’s substantial contributions to fostering cutting-edge research and facilitating global discussions on sustainability. Dr. Nishi Srivastava and Dr. Swagata Payra, the event’s convener and co-convener, respectively, provided insights into the conclave’s core ideas and themes.

The conclave featured insightful sessions from eminent speakers. Dr. Nadege Blond, a CNRS Research Scientist at the Université de Strasbourg, France, delivered a keynote address titled “Know our atmosphere: why and for whom? From global climate commitments to local solutions,” offering a global perspective on atmospheric processes and their impact on climate change.

Mr. Abhishek Anand, In-Charge of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Ranchi, provided insights into meteorology and climate change. His talk highlighted why the world needs meteorologists and which areas are dependent on meteorology. Moving ahead he threw light on the recent initiatives of the Meteorological Center, Ranchi. Dr. Manish Kumar, Research Lead at SIDHA, a program under the Jharkhand State Government, discussed leveraging ground, satellite, and model-derived information for air quality management in the state. Dr. Tanushree Bhattacharya, Associate Professor at BIT Mesra, explored vehicular pollution and its effects.

The conclave fostered critical discussions on various themes, including the synergy of ground-based observations, satellite data, and modeling for air quality management; the role of scientific research in informing public policy; and the integration of science, policy, and community engagement for sustainable environmental practices.To disseminate the outcomes of the conclave and engage a wider audience, students from PM SHRI JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA BIT MESRA RANCHI, DAV NANDRAJ PUBLIC SCHOOL, BARIATU, RANCHI, Ranchi University, and Usha Martin University actively participated in the event.

The International Conclave on Atmospheric Sciences 2024 successfully brought together scientists, academics, researchers, and policymakers, fostering collaborations, stimulating productive discussions, and facilitating information exchange.
