Three new dairy plants will be constructed in Jharkhand on a turn-key basis by Anand-headquartered National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). Jharkhand government has requested NDDB to set up these new plants at Sarath (Deoghar), Sahebganj and Palamu by March, June and September next year respectively. The three plants to be constructed at the cost of Rs 90 crore will initially have capacity of 50 TLPD, but could be expandable to 100 TLPD.
Discussions are also between NDDB and Jharkhand government to construct products dairy plant at Hotwar and two dairy plants of 50 thousand litre per day (TLPD) capacity at Jamshedpur and Giridih, capacity of whom will be expandable to 100 TLPD. Currently, there are four dairy plants at Ranchi, Deoghar, Koderma and Latehar under Jharkhand Milk Federation with combined capacity of 140 TLPD and one cattle feed plant at Hotwar, Ranchi. The total milk handling and processing capacity of Jharkhand Milk Federation is expected to go up to around five lakh litres per day (LLPD) by 2024 with the addition of these new dairy plants.
From 1st April 2014, NDDB took over management of JMF which has operations in Ranchi, Ramgarh, Lohardaga, Khunti, Hazaribag, Koderma, Giridih, Deoghar, Dhanbad, Palamau, Garhwa, Chatra, Latehar, Bokaro and Godda. The average annual milk procurement from these 15 districts in 2019-20 was about 117.52 thousand kg per day and around 102.99 TLPD was marketed. Jharkhand cabinet approved extension of MoU between NDDB and JMF till 31st March, 2024 and NDDB will continue to manage JMF till end of the MoU.
