Sukhdev Bhagat, a former Jharkhand Congress president who had joined BJP only last year, was expelled by BJP on Friday for allegedly being involved in anti-party activities. Sukhdev Bhagat had joined BJP in October 2019 and had contested in the assembly elections from the reserved seat of Lohardagga on a BJP ticket.
Lately, he was seen at nomination of Congress candidate Anup Singh in Bermo. He expressed that he was close to Late Rajendra Singh and his family and that his emotional connect had brought him to Anup Singh’s nomination rally. However BJP noted it as an activity against the party and took the decision to expel him. According to sources, Sukhdev Bhagat had not visited BJP headquarters in Ranchi even once even though he had been in BJP for more than a year and had also contested the elections on a BJP ticket. He has also been accused of issuing statements and orders on his own and not following the party’s orders.
Sukhdev Bhagat started his political journey with Congress in 2005 and was elected as an MLA from Lohardagga. Although he lost elections in 2009 and 2014, he did manage to win by-election on the same seat. He was elevated to the position of Jharkhand Congress president in 2013. When he left Congress in 2019, Dr Ajoy took over the post. However he also left Congress shortly after. With Dr Ajoy going back to Congress, Sukhdev Bhagat is expected to take the same path. He reacted to the expulsion with “Thanks BJP”.
