Out of 104 ventilators, 45 don’t even work, says a senior doctor from RIMS Ranchi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a virtual meeting with the country’s big doctors to deal with the covid-19 pandemic, in which Jharkhand’s doctor told Prime Minister Modi in the meeting, that half of the ventilators from PM Cares Fund don’t work.

Jharkhand received 104 ventilators from the PM cares fund a month ago but out of 104 ventilators 45 don’t work at all, and suggested that the government should focus on quality over quantity. Dr Bhattacharya said some parts of the ventilator were missing and had technical problems.

When they were treating seriously infected corona patients in RIMS, there was no tube in the ventilator, even the pressure was not being generated. In such a situation, the ventilator is useless and should be locked in the store room.

Hospitals are facing a shortage of technicians and even after they find technicians to fix the ventilators, the parts of the ventilator were missing so it was really difficult to fix. Engineers of the manufacturing company were called by RIMS but they too could not fix the ventilators. Looking into the shortage of technicians and medical employees Dr. Bhattacharya suggested employing individuals.

Before Jharkhand, Punjab and Rajasthan government also questioned the quality of ventilators given by PM Cares. The governments of these states had alleged that these ventilators are either defective or of very simple standard. The minister of Rajasthan had even told these ventilators to be junk.

The Punjab government said that we’ve received 320 ventilators from the PM Cares Fund. The heads of three Punjab medical colleges have claimed that 237 of these ventilators are either defective or not functioning at all. Technicians are not able to make them work even after repairing those ventilators.

However, later Dr. Pradip Bhattacharya (RIMS) said that – Those 45 ventilators had mild disturbances, which can be easily overcome. The machine cannot be said, to be defective. Hopefully they will be fixed soon.
