Even though there is a global slowdown caused by Covid-19, there is no dearth of job offers for students of IIT-ISM Dhanbad and other government engineering colleges in the district including BIT. While 64 students in IIT-ISM have received pre-placement offers during the last 30 days. These students have been offered jobs by large multi-national companies which include companies like Microsoft, Walmart, Amazon, Goldman Sachs. These companies have offered packages ranging from Rs 12 lakh to Rs 43.3 lakh per annum to the students of the institute. The pre-placement offer is given to students who perform well during the internship in these companies during their B.Tech third year. Companies offer jobs to these students without formal interviews. During the last session 2019-20, 120 students of the institute got jobs through pre-placement offers. This year, the figure is expected to increase, as expressed by the Institute’s Career Development Centre. Microsoft’s offer has been the largest in offers received by the students so far with the company offering 43.3 lakh per annum package to 14 students.
Australian company Goldman Sachs has also offered pre-placement offers to students of the IIT-ISM. The company has offered this to 7 students of the institute. Of these, six are B.Tech students while one M.Tech. All seven students have been offered a package of Rs 31.5 lakh each. In total, 64 students of the institute have received pre-placement offers till the first week of August with the beginning of academic session 2020-21. The figure is expected to exceed 100 by the end of August. IIT-ISM Dhanbad officially starts the placement season from 1st December every year. More than 140 companies come for campus placements every year during this season, which runs from December to June. In the last session, 700 students were offered jobs which included offers from a large number of companies from public sector units, including ONGC, Hindustan Zinc Corporation Limited. Coal India did not come to campus during the last session, but it has assured that it will be there this year. According to Prof. SK Sinha, Chairman, Career Development Centre of the Institute, a good number of campus placements are expected this year.
The students of BIT Sindri, the oldest engineering college under the state government, are also getting a lot of offers. Companies are offering good packages of million to the students of the institute including offers from a number of Tata group companies, More than 40 Indian multinational companies such as TCS, Tata Steel, Tata Power, Tata Power, Reliance Industries, Wipro, ACC, Jindal Steel, Adani Group have so far offered jobs to 313 students. Bit Sindri students are the most sought after in the core sector. About 50 per cent of campus placement students have been selected in core sectors like steel and power. Thereafter, students have been selected in the IT sector. At the same time, reputed coaching institutes in the country have given faculty jobs to a large number of students. TCS alone has been the largest employer company during the session 2019-20 by offering jobs to 16 per cent of the institute’s students. In addition, PinClick has offered jobs to 11 per cent of the institute’s students, Aditya Birla Group to 7, Sify Technology to 6, Viraj Profile Limited to 5, Tata Power, Tata Steel, JSW, Adani Group have offered jobs to 4 per cent of the students each.
According to Dr. Ghanshyam, in-charge of the institute’s training and placement cell, the campus placement of B.tech final year students of the new session 2020-21 has started. He said that due to lockdown, the campus season of the last session 2019-20 students was not completed, so it is going on for those students as well. He said that amid the slowdown, the demand for students from the institute has actually increased.
